J-rack vs. saddles i have a thule j-rack (hull-a-port?), but recently switched to saddles. i have an element and found that the roof line, plus thule bars, was too tall to easily use the j-rack. in addition to using a step stool to get up to rack level, i found it tricky to get the straps over the boat.. Kayakers love saddle carriers because they’re the easiest type of rack to use; just tip the kayak onto the rear of the saddle and then push it forward. the downside is that the kayak takes up more roof space sitting horizontally, so it can be difficult to fit two boats, especially on a smaller vehicle.. Saddles, which consist of two pads that spread from the vehicle’s base rack to the bottom of the kayak, utilize as much of the roof’s flat surface as possible to provide stability. these are aerodynamic, easy to load and unload, and available in fixed or adjustable designs..
